The History Center Is Going To The Plaza

The Chattanooga History Center will have a new home on the Tennessee Aquarium Plaza. The joint announcement was made today at the annual History Makers Luncheon by Chattanooga History Center Board President, Maury Nicely, and RiverCity Company President, Kim White.

The Center will occupy the space currently housing the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau and plans to open in Spring 2012. The new History Center will combine artifacts from Chattanooga’s past with interactive technology to help people understand this place, appreciate its unique features, and help people connect to the city and the region.

RiverCity President Kim White said, “RiverCity is pleased to have assisted the Chattanooga History Center in becoming part of the waterfront neighborhood and looks forward to the creation of an educational and interpretive experience that will connect us all to Chattanooga’s  pasts.”

In making the announcement, Board President Maury Nicely said, “Over the past year, the Chattanooga History Center has undergone a name change, a rebranding and completed a Comprehensive Master Plan to ensure future success for the facility. With a new site secured, the Chattanooga History Center is poised for outstanding future success and will be a bridge not only to students of history but to those coming into our community from other places to call our city ‘home’. We have a bold vision for the new Chattanooga History Center and aim to become a regional leader in exhibition, outreach, and programming.”

Dr. Daryl Black, Executive Director of the Center, said, “The Chattanooga History Center enjoys great current success as a museum without walls. Our educational programs and walking tours of significant sites continue to exceed all attendance expectations. When the new facility opens, we will be positioned to offer even more programs, to share the many stories of Chattanooga’s past and to provide a solid foundation for this community’s future. Nothing could please us more.”

For history... does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do.
