We Know Lots of This Family’s Stories. Do We Know YOURS?
Ida and Hubert Taliaferro, Sr. are pictured with sons, Hubert (standing) and Gilbert, in an early1930’s family portrait. The story of the family’s World War II experience is in the History Center’s archives, and will be shared in the new exhibits.
Among the exciting new elements in the exhibits at the Chattanooga History Center’s new facility, will be Story Center, a special place where visitors can leave personal oral histories and scan family documents. Visitors to the Center will also be able to access stories already donated. To give Chattanooga residents opportunities to donate their stories for our archives before opening the program to all visitors, the History Center will be sending volunteers to various collections sites throughout the city.
The stories of the workers who lived Chattanooga’s industrial past are not well documented and in danger of being lost forever now that the workers are getting on in years. Many other groups are also in this endangered category, such as veterans of several wars, and people who remember urban neighborhoods before the advent of the interstate highway system.
The thing we want you to bear in mind, however, is that every single one of you have at least one really good story. We’d like to have it. So, please watch for the announcement that a Story Center collection site is coming to your neighborhood, and join us in this initiative.
